but what about what a secretary of defense is confronting today? what about the war in afghanistan? what about the war on terrorism? what about the budget sequester? >> ruth, what do you think, does panetta have a point there? >> i think he totally has a point. i think that the thing that was striking about the hague will confirmation hearing was the really poor performance on both sides. yes, the nominee did a terrible job answering entirely predictable questions and handling those, but also, the senators did a predictable but also very poor job of probing seriously his views, not just what he said in the past, but his views on the various things that will face the secretary of defense going forward. i think one thing that is likely to me is that despite his poor performance, he is going to be confirmed as secretary of defense, and so i would for one like to know some of the answers to those questions. >> so one of the possibilities here, this is more about optics, david brooks suggesting that chuck hagel simply go to the president and ask do you still want me after that appearance. her

. because of what we saw in the final quarter of the year 2012, the economy actually shrank as defense contractors -- or in part because defense contractors said you know he what? the axe is about to fall. get ready for this. we're going to pull back now. remember, we spend more than $900 billion a year on the defense department, on the pentagon, and so these contractors have a lot to say about the overall size of our economy. the president having seen that is going to say look. we have these cuts that we agreed to go into place, but the economy can't handle it right now, so let's kick the can a little bit and do some of these same kinds of cuts, and they call them cuts, but they're not really cuts. sometimes they're reductions to future increases, sometimes they're taking into account things like not fighting in the iraq war any more, and accounting gimmickry to get to the next thing, and then we'll fall off that cliff when we get to it. >> we understand the president is going to highlight some bad things that will happen if this doesn't get resolved, things like kids getting kicked o

at the gdp number, what is interesting, part of the reason why it contracted, there were cuts to defense spending. the obama administration saying this is an indication that spending cuts, what republicans calling for, don't necessarily work. the thing that is sort of looming over this mixed bag, this economy picture that we got this week, are, of course, these fiscal fights coming up on the horizon. republicans and democrats will have to deal with that. first up, the sequester which could potentially work in deeper spending cuts to defense spending, nondiscretionary spending. that's something that the white house, that congress will really have to deal with, and that's sort of first up on the list of fiscal fights in a series of them, alex, on the horizon. >> kristen welker, thank you for that. we'll see you in the best of office politics in a half an hour. >>> later on, new campaign for immigration reform. a new report suggests it may not be much of a help for the republican party which lost the hispanic vote in historic numbers in november. the story in 30 minutes or so. >>> also new

for the defense secretary, the leader said it was entirely possible. >> it is unclear yet. senator hagel didn't do a very good job before the armed services committee, i think the opposition to him has intensified, whether it means he will achieve 60 votes or 51 is not clear. >> meaning they will filibuster, the republicans call themselves conservatives. but that word, i don't think it means what you think it means, overthrowing decades of unprecedented issues, it is certain, noises for filibustering, that is a leap, if they filibuster chuck hagel, they will not succeed. we know it because of math. there are 55 senators in the democracy caucus, they support chuck hagel, you need 60 to override a filibuster, so if you carry the one, the democrats only need one on their side to support a filibuster, there are two on record supporting chuck hagel for defense secretary, and we've seen reports for another six republican senators who have said that even though they may, oppose hagel, they wouldn't support a filibuster, there are two that seem unlikely to filibuster as well. that means a total of ten rep
